The Sydney Prize and the Neilma Sidney Prize

The Sydney Prize is Australia’s international peace prize, honouring leading global voices who promote peace with justice, human rights and non-violence. It has been awarded for over two decades and past laureates include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mary Robinson, Noam Chomsky and the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Your donation helps the Laureates continue their vital work for a more just and peaceful world.

The Board of Social Study and Training Scholarship was established in 1941 with the remaining funds of the Board which preceded the University in training social workers, and has been supplemented since 2006 from donations made in memory of Eva Byrne, a dedicated social worker and community advocate. The Scholarship is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Social Work to a student with the highest aggregate marks in the third year of a Bachelor of Social Work degree.

Established in 2015, the Unites States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney deepens our understanding of America by researching and teaching about American politics, foreign policy, economy, culture, history and society. It recognises and rewards our high-performing students who undertake units of study in the USSC, and we are proud to present the John Curtin ‘America’s Dream’ Prize to acknowledge their achievements.

This industry prize was donated by Sydney Film Production Company Pty Ltd (T/A Sydney Films) to assist with the cost of producing a Master of Moving Image final project and to give students experience working on an industry-based project. It is awarded on the basis of academic merit and the proposal for production services.

In order to perpetuate in some small way the generative influence which Sidney Cox exercised upon hundreds of Dartmouth students, a group of his friends has solicited funds with a view to establishing an annual prize for that piece of undergraduate writing which most nearly meets the high standards of originality and integrity which he himself set both for his classes and for his own manuscripts.

Each year, a panel of judges will review the applications and select one winner and up to two runners-up for the Overland Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize. The winning story will be published in the autumn 2024 edition of Overland, and each of the runners-up will be published online, along with their story.

The Sidney J Levy Award competition honors the memory of one of the founding fathers of Consumer Culture Theory by awarding the best CCT-oriented dissertation article that has been published in the previous year. One award of $1500 will be awarded and one honorable mention will be named ($1000). Interested authors are encouraged to submit their dissertation-based articles for consideration. The winners will be announced at the annual CCT conference luncheon. One additional honorable mention may be given ($1000). The competition is open to all scholars.
