This year, the theme of the Hong Kong prize is Our Changing World. The judges looked for articles that reflected the global evolution socially, culturally and economically through different forms of expression.
A wide range of submissions were received, with the winning articles demonstrating high-quality research methodology and the ability to engage readers. They were judged on their relevance, systematic use of collected materials, objectivity in analysis and citation of bibliography and footnotes. The winning articles also had a clear and compelling message.
This year’s winners include a team of secondary school students from Hong Kong who worked on the project “Hong Kong in the 1967 Riots” – an excellent and innovative report that demonstrates how young people can understand history through research and writing. Their study reflects the importance of understanding the past to develop the future, while contributing to the community and developing a sense of responsibility for the society.
Another winner was the HKUST team that created a prototype of an artificial intelligence system to identify potential threats to human life in a real-world setting. The system uses deep learning techniques to detect anomalies from a vast amount of historical and scientific data. The HKUST team was praised for its creativity and dynamism, as well as its commitment to solving real-world problems through scientific innovation.
